Instructions for Self-Injecting Vitamin B12

Frequency and Dosage

  • Frequency: The patient can inject once or twice a week.
  • Dosage: The recommended dose is 1 ml per injection.

Injection Method

  • Type of Injection: Intramuscular (IM).

Intramuscular Injection Sites

The areas where you can inject intramuscularly include:

  1. Deltoid (Upper Arm):
    • Location: Upper part of the arm, about 2-3 fingers below the acromion (shoulder).
    • Instructions: Relax the arm. Mark the center of the fleshiest part of the deltoid muscle. Clean the area with alcohol and then inject at a right angle (90 degrees) to the skin.
  2. Vastus Lateralis (Outer Thigh):
    • Location: Outer part of the thigh, in the middle third.
    • Instructions: Sit or lie down with the leg slightly bent. Clean the area with alcohol. Insert the needle at a right angle into the middle part of the thigh muscle.
  3. Gluteus (Buttock):
    • Location: Upper outer part of the buttock (upper outer quadrant).
    • Instructions: Divide the buttock into four imaginary quadrants. Clean the area with alcohol. Inject into the upper outer quadrant at a right angle.

General Steps for the Injection

  1. Wash Your Hands: Use soap and water before handling supplies.
  2. Gather Supplies: You will need a syringe, needle, vial of the Vitamin B12 solution, alcohol wipes, and cotton.
  3. Prepare the Syringe:
    • Clean the vial with an alcohol wipe.
    • Draw 1 ml of air into the syringe.
    • Insert the needle into the vial and push the air into the vial.
    • Draw 1 ml of the Vitamin B12 solution into the syringe.
  4. Select the Injection Site: Clean the area with an alcohol wipe.
  5. Inject:
    • Insert the needle into the selected area at a right angle (90 degrees).
    • Push the plunger to inject the solution.
  6. Apply Pressure: After removing the needle, apply pressure to the area with a cotton ball to stop any bleeding.

Possible Side Effects

During the Injection:

  • Pain or discomfort at the injection site.
  • Burning or stinging sensation as the liquid is injected.

After the Injection:

  • Redness or swelling at the injection site.
  • Muscle pain in the injection area.
  • Slight fever or a feeling of warmth at the injection site.
  • Dizziness or weakness (rare, but possible).
